PRESS RELEASE : Rwanda to celebrate the 2019 World Science Day on 15 November 2019

On the 15th November 2019, the Ministry of Education (MINEDUC), in collaboration with the Rwanda National Commission for UNESCO (CNRU), the National Council for Science and Technology (NCST), and African Institute for Mathematical Sciences-Next Einstein Forum (AIMS-NEF) will celebrate the 2019 World Science Day (WSD) under the proposed theme by UNESCO for 2019: “Science for Peace and Development: Open Science, Leaving no one Behind”.

The celebration will be held at IPRC Gishari, in Rwamagana District, Eastern Province. The event will be marked by Public Talks and Exhibitions focusing on the importance of Open Science, benefits of scientific progress and its applications towards the wellbeing of the society.

The celebration of the WSD aims at improving access to Science and to the benefits of Science, Technology and Engineering Mathematics (STEM) for sustainable development and conducting awareness on the role of Science, Technology and Innovation in Education Sector and the community.

The celebration of the WSD was recommended during the World Conference on Science that took place in Budapest in 1999. The first celebration was held in 2002 and each year the UNESCO releases a specific theme. In order to promote responsible use of science and underline its essential contribution to peaceful society, from 2010 to 2020, the WSD has been dedicated for Peace and Development, as a decadal theme, aiming at linking science with society.

In Rwanda, celebrations started in 2009 and were organized annually by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Rwanda National Commission for UNESCO (CNRU).  Last year, the celebration took place on 9thNovember 2018, in UR-College of Agriculture, Animal Sciences and Veterinary Medicine in Musanze District, Northern Province.
