Improved Learning Infrastructure Expands Opportunities for Learners in Rubavu
Investments in school infrastructure are helping learners access quality education and pursue their aspirations with greater confidence. At GS Umubano II in Rubavu District, new facilities constructed by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the World Bank through the Rwanda Quality Basic Education for Human Capital Development (RQBE) Project are already making a tangible difference in the lives of learners and teachers
Among the beneficiaries Murebwa Rindwa Faith, a Senior Five student in the Physics, Chemistry and Biology (PCB) combination who dreams of becoming a doctor. After transferring from a boarding school, Faith was initially concerned that the move might affect her academic journey. However, her concerns quickly faded when she discovered the learning environment at GS Umubano II.
“The facilities available here, especially the laboratories, have given me confidence that I can achieve my dream of becoming a doctor,” she says. “At my previous school, we often lacked the equipment needed to fully understand practical lessons. Here, students have access to well-equipped laboratories that help us connect theory with practice.”
Faith believes that access to quality science facilities will better prepare her for university studies and a future career in medicine. She also notes that being a day scholar has not limited her academic performance.
“What matters most is commitment and hard work. I use my time after school to revise lessons and conduct research, which helps me stay focused on my goals,” she explains.
Faith consistently scores above 80 percent and regularly ranks among the top students in her class. She credits the school's improved learning environment with strengthening her motivation and determination to succeed.
For Nakure Marie Thérèse, Head Teacher of GS Umubano II, the new infrastructure has transformed the school by creating moreconducive environment for teaching and learning.
“The additional classrooms have reduced overcrowding, with class sizes decreasing from around 60 students to between 38 and 40,” she explains. “The new laboratories have transformed science education by allowing students to engage in practical learning, while the ICT laboratories are helping them develop digital skills and conduct research.”
She adds that the construction of a perimeter fence has improved security and discipline, while additional sanitation facilities have enhanced hygiene standards across the school.
GS Umubano II, which serves 1,278 learners, received substantial infrastructure support through the RQBE Project, including 11 classrooms, two ICT classrooms, a science laboratory for Physics, Chemistry and Biology, a staff room, a perimeter fence, nine water tanks, and 14 toilet units. The project's support also included the renovation of the school's kitchen and dining facilities.
These investments reflect the Ministry of Education's continued commitment to improving learning environments and ensuring that every learner has access to the facilities and opportunities needed to succeed.
